It's Still Life: Chapter 4

Welcome to the 5th edition of The Pulse -- The State of the Art -- a survey in words and pictures of the online artist community. The Pulse is a collaborative project that aims to introduce you to new artists, help you get to know familiar faces even more, and allow you access into the creative hearts and minds of a very talented crew of individuals. More than 130 artists have answered a series of questions which make up The Pulse. Their responses will be presented in a series of online posts which will run every Sunday.

Style File, Techniques & Tools, and Master Class were the first three projects posted and links to all these posts can be found on the sidebar of my blog. The fourth project, It's Still Life, continues now...

Participants were asked to photograph a still life that you create using an array of objects.

A lovely assortment of still lives for Chapter 4. Jill has gone 'traditional-classic' with her lovely combination of figure, book with writing instrument, metal pitcher with an array of paint brushes, and seashell. Judy's Light struck feathers with white pitcher dazzle the senses. Stephanie's rectangular arrangement of wonderful objects of different shapes and sizes, is all the more visually arresting for the limited color palette of oxidized aquamarines and light tans. Amy Duncan's minimalist "It's Nesting Time" arrangement of sugar canister, book, and eggshell, is a wonderful study in contrasts of objects, and a delightful visual pun, to boot. Eileen's enigmatic shoe mold, hand, and public school medallion, backed by a colorful, seemingly Asian-influenced, collage, is, both, visually arresting, and obliquely mysterious. Incredible and very interesting variety in terms of what objects artists have chosen to incorporate, when asked to create a still life. So. . . I think a great future 'assignment' for the next edition of The Pulse, would be for each of us to pick a favorite still life from The Pulse, edition 5, (one created by another artist), draw, paint, or collage it (in whatever style we choose), and display the drawn, painted, or collaged versions next to the original still life. Just a thought, Seth!

A wonderful collection, Seth, and great links to work through. I really like the way I am recognizing names, all thanks to you.

What a great idea. Creating arrangements tells as much about the artist as an entire page of words.

So many still life ideas . . . fantastic!

What a terrific variety of Still Life creations! When we received the assignment- I thought only about the traditional "still life" type of design but love seeing all of these creative compositions! Thanks so much for including me!

LOVE Robert's editorial comments --- my mom used to do that with everyone's art in the books in which I had work. Robert, you brought a tear to my eye, in a good way...

SETH!! Shut UP!

I just watched your first video at CMM, and I LOVE it! I love it so much that I was just now compelled to say shut up to a doctor.

Please come over to my house. We'll barbeque in the back by the pool, and you can analyze why I can't seem to be happy when I'm not stalking people. And you can also read my dog's expressions. She seems angry.

But after all that, we can set up the spray paint station and the texturizing table and make stuff! It'll be like old times! I mean, if we had ever actually done it before.

Seriously. Great video. I want your baby even more, now. (except I'm really busy right now. maybe next year.)

Thanks, Sarah, for your very kind words. And, you know what? Moms are just like that!
